I vaguely recall reading some of Coulter’s Gothics when I was younger and enjoying them, and this one, hewing to my current taste for crime and mystery reads, had some enjoyable elements—the complex layers of plot and the romance being two of them. But, all in all, it was uneven and I often wondered if Ms. Coulter’s editor had taken a vacation during this one. There were factual errors, grammatical errors, and point-of-view shifts that sometimes happened in the middle of a paragraph. Once one character’s thoughts blurred into another character’s dialogue. The dialogue itself was problematic at times as well. I found myself thinking “real people don’t talk like this” a lot. That was the tip of the iceberg. There were plot elements that seemed important that the author seemed to have forgotten about later in the book and it almost felt as if she didn’t know until she got to the final quarter of the story what the real situation was.The most jarring thing, though, was the way her manipulation of the characters and the plot to create drama challenged and then completely derailed my willing suspension of disbelief. An example (possible spoiler): The female lead, Sherlock, has been stalked and assaulted in her home—which shouldn’t have been allowed to happen, but that’s another item. The male lead, Savich, has stated that after this he will check her place before he lets her go in. He doesn’t. He drops her off at her car ‘cos phone call, and she goes into her house alone in the dark, not being at all on alert when the lights fail to come on. The first time she thinks that a practically new lightbulb has died, then that her breakers must have tripped. Of course, bad people are awaiting her.In this instance, and in others, I found myself thinking that the person Sherlock has been depicted as would not be that incautious. She thinks the Big Bad is elsewhere, but there are still at least 3 other people she should be wary of.In the romance, as well, the character acts in ways that seem inconsistent with her established character. All in all, the plot and its characters seem as if they are compelled, not by their character and the situation, but by the author deciding, “I need this to happen here” and simply making it so instead of making sure the elements were in the story to make it happen organically. It won’t keep me from reading more about Savich and Sherlock, but it did dampen my enthusiasm a bit. As did the tendency for the characters to uniformly spout political talking points that relied heavily on straw men/stereotypes, generalization, and occasional departures from reality.
